Young Person’s Guide To Future Boosting Opportunities

student

As you move through secondry school, the choices surrounding your future can feel more and more overwhelming. Choosing the right career path, achieving the relevant qualifications and developing skills that can be added to your cv to make you stand out all become important factors.

Input from friends and family, although often well intended, can add to the confusion, so finding inpartial advice can help to give you a push in the right direction.

Many young people leave important decisions about their career path until the last minute (which is ok, you can still find guidance at this point) but planning early can give you the best opportunities and set you on your chosen path without delay.

Around the time you start to prepare for your GCSE’s, many schools provide access to careers advisors that can talk you through your options. If you have a special interest or talent, a career path may present itself and you can start to tailor your education and knowledge towards this profession. If you’re unsure what kind of career you’d like when you leave school, you can use your final years to explore different options. It may be that instead of looking at University courses to gain an advanced understanding of a curriculum based subject, you may prefer an apprenticeship to learn a specialist skill whilst earning. If you have a more niche skill, there are also colleges offering courses on subjects such as fashion, performing arts, design, beauty therapy, music and photography/videography.

With your basic GCSE grades, you have the foundation skills for most jobs. English, Maths and ICT skills are required in many careers, although if you don’t do so well, there are always other options available – it’s all about working with what you have or love!

work experienceWhat opportunities are available to young people to enchance their skills and made their CV really stand out?

Work experience placements

Work experience placements usually take place while you are a year 10 or 11 student. These placements are an opportunity to gain real life experience with a company, allowing you to decide whether this is a career path you’d like to persue. Work experience is also a great opportunity to learn new workbased skills that look great on your cv. While you’re there, you will also have the chance to speak with employees and find out about how their qualifications and experiences helped them to get into that career.

Whilst you’re on your work experience placement, you will be expected to assist with daily tasks and the day-to-day workings of the workplace you chose.  These tasks and duties will vary depending on the type of work environment you are interested in.  You may be given some junior level work to complete during the placement which will give you a chance to really shine! Don’t expect to be working on anything too advanced though as many workplaces may have legal or qualificational limitations on what they can get you to work on.

Your college will have certain work experience placements they can offer you. If you prefer to work in a different area, you can approach companies directly to ask about work experience opportunities, or contact an independant advice service such as LEBC who offer work experience including placements with Leicester hospitals.

If you perform well during your work experience placement, you could also ask for an open reference which looks great in your record of achievement folder.

Three Simple Tips for Acing the SAT

Three Simple Tips for Acing the SAT

Taking the SAT is one of the major highlights of every student’s academic life. Passing the said standardized test helps determine the future for many students, especially those who are eager to get into a good college or university. While perfect SAT scores come once in a blue moon, it is a possibility. Aside from the usual SAT practice tests, there are other things you can do to make sure you get a high score, or you get a chance to ace the test. Here are three of them.

1. When studying for the SAT, use questions that are similar to the ones asked during the test.

You do not need to have a dummy copy of the SAT to do this. You only need to make sure that the questions you answer are the types that are asked during the SAT. You can use online test guides or prep books. The best thing to do, however, is to take SAT practice tests that are given by the College Board.

2. During Practice Tests, Analyze Your Mistakes and Work on Your Weaknesses

Which question types gave you the most mistakes? Why do you think this is so? What are your weaknesses? These questions are necessary if you want to improve your SAT performance. Trying to determine which types of questions you find difficult will help you figure out what you need to improve on.

3. Finally, during the actual SAT, determine which problems or questions you should spend time on and which ones you should pass up.

Using your strengths and weaknesses (which you developed by doing tip number two), determine which problems or questions are easiest for you and spend some time answering them. Do not skip the ones you are struggling to answer, just focus on them last. This will give you more time to respond to the questions that you are sure you’ll get right. Likewise, this will help you answer all questions so that you won’t skip an item or two.

Teaching Children the Importance of Reading

Teaching Children the Importance of Reading

Reading is important if you want your children to perform well in school. A student who regularly reads will have an easier time understanding his lessons compared to someone who has not opened and read a book. In fact, students who are still not able to read at the age of eight can already be predicted to develop learning difficulties. Teaching children how to read, and to value reading, therefore, is essential. Here are things you need to remember when teaching your children to read.

As Parents, Learning Has to Start From You

1

A child’s parents are his first teachers. Therefore, you should find time to read with your children. Start by reading a book to him before bed. Then gradually change this habit by asking your child to read with you. Every week, give him something new to read. Reward him with small prizes to encourage him. Then sit down with him and discuss all the stories you read. This will not only help develop a healthy reading habit for your child, but it will also teach him how to analyze situations.

Pair Up Reading with Writing

2

Helping your child learn how to write is an essential part of the reading process. Writing is basically like reading; you write a sentence, dialogue, or a story on paper instead of saying it out loud. Train your child to write. Better yet, ask him to write his own version of the story you read together. This will not only improve his reading and writing skills, but it will also help him develop a creative mind.

Encourage Your Child to Join a Book Club

3

Once your child joins a book club, he will be exposed to more reading materials. This will give him more options to choose from in terms of book or story types. Likewise, it will teach him how to interact with children his age. He can discuss the books he reads with his co-members. This will help develop a healthy reading practice for your child. Joining a book club is also fun, so your child is guaranteed to love the experience!

Three Simple Tips for Improving Your Grade in Math

Three Simple Tips for Improving Your Grade in Math

Math has always been one of the weaknesses of many students. Parents often find themselves looking for ways to help improve their child’s performance in math. Some even go out of their way to find a math tutor for their child. There are things that students can do, though, if they want to improve their grade in math. Here are three tips that you can follow.

1. Do not move on to another topic if you haven’t mastered the first one yet.

If you are having a difficult time mastering the multiplication table (for example), do not go on to multiplying fractions just because you’re getting tired of studying the same thing over and over. You cannot learn something if you haven’t yet understood the lesson that came before that new one. In other words, do not be in a hurry to advance. Find time to slowly master every lesson. Math requires a lot of mastery. If you’ve gotten tired of the usual learning process, find other ways to understand the lesson. Look for illustrated materials that you can use for studying. Or find a food study buddy.

2. Learning and understanding math is a process. Do not try to solve problems without following this process.

Do not solve the problem in your mind while you are still reading it. If you do the solving in your mind in advance, you will not have enough time to analyze and understand the problem. Follow the step-by-step process. Read the problem, analyze and understand it, and then write down the problem before coming up with the solution. Do not attempt to compute in your head; write everything down. Do not try to do everything at one time because this will only complicate the situation and confuse you even more.

3. If it will help you understand the problem more, illustrate or draw it.

There are instances when understanding a problem becomes easier when it is interpreted through drawing. This is particularly the case for subjects like geometry, physics, and trigonometry, among others. If the word problem is too confusing for you, illustrate it or draw a picture of it.
